Game description:

PGA Tour Golf is a sports simulation game developed and published by Electronic Arts for DOS in 1990. It was a landmark title that helped define the modern golf video game, moving away from simple arcade mechanics toward a more realistic simulation of the sport. It features real-world courses like the TPC at Sawgrass and includes statistics and likenesses of actual PGA Tour professionals of the era.

How to play

The objective is to complete the course with the lowest score possible. The core mechanic is the three-click swing meter: press the action key to start your backswing, press it again to set your power, and a third time to determine your accuracy at the point of impact. Before swinging, you can review the hole layout, check the wind, and select your club. As a DOS game, the controls rely on standard keyboard inputs, typically using the Spacebar or Enter for the swing meter and arrow keys for aiming.

Tips

  • Mind the wind: Wind direction and speed significantly affect the flight of the ball. Always check the wind indicator before choosing your club and aiming your shot.
  • Adjust for elevation: When hitting uphill, you will need more club than the distance suggests; downhill shots require less club to avoid overshooting the green.
  • Read the greens: Putting requires a careful touch. Use the grid overlay to read the slope of the green, and remember that the swing meter moves faster while putting.
