Game description:

Famicom Shougi – Ryuuousen is a 1991 Japanese chess (shogi) video game developed and published by ASCII Corporation for the Family Computer (NES). Named after the prestigious Ryūō tournament in professional shogi, the game provides a digital platform for players to test their tactical skills against computer-controlled AI opponents across traditional shogi matches.

How to Play

Select your moves on the 9×9 board to capture the opponent’s King. In browser play, use the Arrow Keys to navigate the board and highlight pieces. Press Z (A Button) to select or drop a piece, and X (B Button) to cancel or inspect piece movement paths. Open match menus or pause with Enter (Start) and adjust game options using Shift (Select).

Game Tips

  • Establish a Fortress: Construct a defensive castle structure such as the Mino or Yagura early in the match to protect your King before launching offensive operations.
  • Leverage Piece Drops: Retain captured enemy pieces and strategically drop them back onto open squares to fork high-value targets or break down opponent defenses.
