The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a foundational action RPG developed by Nintendo for the SNES in 1991. Returning to the top-down perspective of the original game, it established the modern formula of puzzle-filled dungeons, a vast interconnected overworld, and tool-based progression. Players guide Link across both the Light World of Hyrule and its corrupted Dark World counterpart to rescue Princess Zelda and stop the sorcerer Agahnim.
How to play
Your objective is to explore Hyrule, uncover hidden dungeons, and defeat bosses to gather the Pendants of Virtue and Crystals. As you progress, you will find specialized items like the Hookshot and Pegasus Boots that open up new areas of the map. The browser mappings for the SNES controller are:
- Movement (D-pad): Arrow keys
- Swing Sword (B): X
- Use Item (Y): S
- Action / Dash / Lift (A): Z
- Map (X): A
- L / R: Q / E
- Inventory (Start): Enter
- Select: Shift
Tips
- Listen to the walls: Many bombable walls have visible cracks, but you can also test suspicious solid walls by tapping them with your sword. A hollow clinking sound means a bomb will blow it open.
- Catch fairies in bottles: Swing your Bug-Catching Net at small fairies near fountains and store them in empty bottles. If your health depletes entirely, a bottled fairy will automatically revive you.
- Use the Magic Cape or Cane of Byrna: If you are struggling with a difficult boss or a hazardous room, these optional items make you temporarily invincible at the cost of magic power.
