Game description:

FIFA International Soccer, published by Electronic Arts in 1993, is the landmark title that launched the defining football franchise in gaming. Released for the SNES, it broke away from the top-down perspective of other 16-bit sports games by introducing an isometric viewpoint that gave the pitch a more realistic, television-style presentation. As the first game in the series, it features only international teams composed of fictional players rather than licensed club rosters.

How to play

Navigate the pitch using the arrow keys. On offense, press X to pass, Z to shoot, and A or S to lob the ball. On defense, press X to switch control to the player nearest the ball, or use Z and A to tackle. You can hold Q or E to sprint, but be mindful of your players’ stamina.

Tips

  • The goalkeeper block: The game features a famous exploit where you can stand directly in front of the opposing goalkeeper as they prepare to kick the ball. The clearance will hit your player and bounce straight into the net for an easy goal.
  • Watch the referee: The referee is actually present on the pitch and can get in the way of the ball. You can even accidentally (or intentionally) tackle him, though you risk getting carded.
