Why did the Sega 32X need its own power supply and video cable?

I recently dug out my old Sega Genesis and picked up a 32X add-on. I'm completely confused by the setup. Why does it need a separate power adapter and this weird loopback video cable just to plug into the Genesis? Why couldn't it just get power and video from the console itself?

    The Genesis cartridge slot just wasn't designed to provide enough power for the 32X's two 32-bit SH-2 processors. The original Genesis power supply was already maxed out running the base console. As for the video cable, the 32X actually mixes its own graphics on top of the Genesis graphics. It needs to take the video output from the Genesis, overlay its own new 32-bit graphics, and then output the combined image to your TV.

    To add to that, Sega was rushing the 32X to market to compete with the upcoming Atari Jaguar and Sony PlayStation. Designing it as a standalone add-on that mixed the video externally was much faster than trying to somehow tap into the Genesis's internal video encoder, which the cartridge slot didn't have the pins for anyway.
