Developed by Dave Nutting Associates, Wizard of Wor is a tense action-shooter released for the Atari 2600 in 1980. Players take on the role of a Worrior descending into a series of labyrinthine dungeons to eradicate deadly monsters. The game is best known for its simultaneous two-player mode where friendly fire is always active, forcing you to carefully clear out creatures while either cooperating with your partner or actively hunting them down.
How to play
Your objective is to clear each maze of enemies, culminating in a fast-paced battle with the winged Worluk and potentially the Wizard of Wor himself. Player 1 moves using the Arrow Keys and shoots with the Spacebar, while Player 2 uses T, G, F, H for movement and A to fire. You can toggle the display mode using F2 and reset the game with F12.
Tips
- Watch your radar: As the dungeon empties, tougher monsters like the Thorwor can turn invisible. Your radar at the bottom of the screen is the only way to track them.
- Mind your line of fire: Your laser can kill your partner. Communicate clearly to avoid accidental friendly fire, or use it to your advantage if you want their remaining lives.
- Hunt the Worluk: The frantic Worluk appears once the regular monsters are defeated. If you can shoot it before it escapes the maze, the point values in the next dungeon will be doubled.
