Game description:

Wit's is an action-puzzle title developed by Athena and released in 1990 for the Famicom (NES). Never officially released outside of Japan, this version is fully playable in English thanks to a fan translation. The game takes the classic light cycle concept popularized by Tron and turns it into a competitive multiplayer experience, challenging players to box each other in across 99 increasingly difficult rounds.

How to Play

The objective is to maneuver your character around the arena, leaving a solid trail behind you, and force your opponents to crash into a wall, a trail, or themselves. You win the round by being the last player standing. Use the D-pad (mapped to your keyboard's arrow keys) to change directions. The action buttons (Z and X on the keyboard) are used to trigger a temporary speed boost or execute your jump ability.

Tips

  • Save your jump: Unlike most light cycle games, you can jump over a line once per life. Keep this ability in reserve to miraculously escape from dead ends and trap an overconfident opponent.
  • Watch your speed: While the speed boost is great for cutting off rivals, using it recklessly makes it much harder to perform tight turns and avoid crashing.
  • Beware the ice: In later stages, environmental hazards like ice patches will cause you to slide, severely affecting your movement and requiring careful steering to survive.
