Wing Commander, published by Origin Systems in 1990, brings the groundbreaking space combat simulator to the SNES. As a rookie pilot aboard the TCS Tiger’s Claw, you fly tense first-person dogfights against the feline Kilrathi empire, managing your ship’s shields, energy, and weapons to survive the Vega Sector campaign.
How to play
Complete patrol, escort, and strike missions to drive back the Kilrathi forces. Use the directional buttons to pitch and turn your starfighter. In your browser, press Z to fire your main lasers and X to launch missiles or use afterburners. The A and S keys (mapped to X and Y) control targeting and navigation, while Q and E (the L and R shoulder buttons) let you roll to evade fire. Keep an eye on your radar to track enemy fighters and communicate with your wingman.
Tips
- Manage your afterburners: Use them in short bursts to close the distance on evasive fighters or to escape when your shields are depleted.
- Listen to your wingman: Pay attention to radio messages. Your wingman can help distract enemies, but they will also call for help if they are overwhelmed.
- Protect your tail: If an enemy gets behind you, roll and pull up sharply to break their line of sight rather than flying in a straight line.
