Released exclusively in Japan for the NES in 1985, Volguard II is a side-scrolling shoot ’em up by dB-SOFT. You control a fighter craft defending Earth from an alien invasion, notable for its ability to dock with additional modules. These power-ups allow the ship to transform into a powerful robot, significantly increasing its offensive capabilities for as long as your energy reserves hold out.
How to play
Survive the scrolling stages, shoot down enemy waves, and collect energy and module upgrades to assemble your robot form. The game uses standard NES controls in the browser: move with the arrow keys, shoot with Z, and press X to manage your ship’s transformation when the necessary modules are collected. Enter acts as Start and Shift as Select.
Tips
- The robot transformation provides massive firepower but constantly drains your energy reserves. Revert to your base fighter form when the screen is clear to conserve energy.
- Energy pickups are vital not just for survival, but because running out of energy will force you out of your robot form and leave you highly vulnerable.
