Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense is a 1999 vehicular combat game developed by Luxoflux for the PlayStation. Set in an alternate 1970s timeline with time travel elements, players choose from a roster of heavily armed vehicles to battle across open arenas. The sequel builds on the original Vigilante 8 by adding vehicle stat upgrades and mobility attachments like hoverpods and skis, radically changing how players navigate the varied terrain.
How to play
The primary goal is to destroy all opponent vehicles in the arena using a mix of a standard machine gun and special weapon pickups. In Quest Mode, you must also complete character-specific objectives to progress. For PlayStation browser emulation, steering is mapped to the arrow keys. Use Z, X, A, and S (representing the face buttons) to accelerate, brake, and fire, and Q or W (shoulder buttons) to cycle targets or select weapons. Enter acts as the Start button.
Tips
- Collect Salvage: Destroyed enemies drop salvage items. Collecting them permanently upgrades your vehicle’s armor, speed, and weapon precision. Maxing out a vehicle unlocks a new upgraded chassis.
- Weapon Combos: Every weapon pickup has hidden fighting-game style input commands (e.g., Up, Down, Fire) that trigger powerful alternate attacks for extra ammo.
- Use the Attachments: In arenas with deep water or snow, look for hoverpod or ski pickups. They prevent your vehicle from slowing down, giving you a massive maneuverability advantage over opponents.
