Vanguard II is a multidirectional scrolling arcade shooter released by SNK in 1984. As the sequel to the original 1981 classic, it shifts from forced-scrolling tunnels to open, free-roaming top-down stages. You pilot a spaceship hovering over floating alien platforms, battling enemy fighters while navigating treacherous terrain in eight directions.
How to Play
Your objective is to destroy a specific number of energy power pods scattered across the platform. Once the required pods are eliminated, the central core becomes vulnerableโbomb it to destroy the platform and advance to the next stage. The controls rely on a dual-attack system: use your primary fire to shoot down aerial enemies and a separate bomb attack to target the power pods on the ground, guided by a crosshair.
- Movement: Arrow keys (D-pad)
- Anti-air Fire: Z or X (A or B button)
- Ground Bomb: X or Z (B or A button)
- Insert Coin: Shift (Select)
- Start: Enter (Start)
Tips
- Master the crosshair: Your bombs land exactly where the crosshair is positioned in front of your ship. Since you lack power-ups, accurate bombing while dodging is your only path to survival.
- Keep moving: The multidirectional scrolling means enemies can approach from any angle. Never stay in one place for too long.
- Prioritise pods: While it’s tempting to focus on dogfighting, clearing the energy pods quickly is the only way to expose the core and finish the stage before getting overwhelmed.
