Originally released in Japan in 1987 by Telenet Japan and Tokuma Shoten, Valis: The Fantastic Soldier brings its anime-infused dark fantasy to the NES. You step into the role of Yuko Asou, an ordinary high school student summoned to defend Earth and the Dreamland from the demon lord Rogles. Unlike its more linear counterparts on other systems, this 8-bit action-platformer takes a uniquely non-linear, maze-like approach to its level design, requiring players to explore branching paths and discover hidden routes.
How to Play
Your objective is to navigate each labyrinthine stage, strike down the dark forces with the legendary Sword of Valis, and overcome the boss waiting at the end of the area. Control Yuko using the Arrow Keys to move and duck. Press Z to attack with your swordโwhich can fire sweeping projectiles when powered upโand X to jump. Use Enter (Start) to pause the game and Shift (Select) to navigate menus.
Tips
- Explore thoroughly: Because the stages are designed as sprawling mazes rather than straight lines, searching off the beaten path will reward you with essential power-ups to upgrade your sword’s range and damage.
- Commit to jumps: Mid-air momentum is difficult to alter once you leave the ground, so time your leaps carefully when navigating narrow platforms or dodging fast-moving enemies.
