Trip World is a 1992 Game Boy platformer from Sunsoft, first released in Japan before reaching Europe in 1993. It stars Yacopu, a rabbit-like creature searching for the stolen Maita flower of peace across five short, brightly drawn worlds. The game is best remembered for pushing the original Game Boy’s monochrome hardware further than almost anything else on the system, with unusually detailed, one-off animation frames throughout.
How to Play
Move Yacopu with the arrow keys, kick with Z and jump with X, and press Enter to pause. Tap Shift (Select) at the title screen to open a level-select menu and jump straight into any of the five worlds â Mount Dubious, Savage Land, Ireland, Pudding Land, and Mirror Land. Yacopu can shapeshift at will between a standard kicking form, a winged form for gliding over gaps, and an aquatic form for swimming, with no penalty for switching mid-level. Most regular enemies just shove Yacopu around rather than damaging him unless he attacks first â the real challenge is saved for the boss fight at the end of each world.
Tips
- Since most regular enemies aren’t a real threat, use the Select-menu level-select to skip straight to whichever world â or boss â you want to practice.
- Swap into the winged or aquatic form on the fly to clear obstacles Yacopu’s standard form can’t handle; there’s no cooldown or penalty for switching.
