Game description:

Track & Field is Konami’s NES port of their 1983 arcade hit, bringing six Olympic athletics disciplines to the home console: 100-metre dash, long jump, 110-metre hurdles, hammer throw, javelin throw, and high jump. The aim of each event is to clear the qualifying standard — miss it and the game is over, beat it and you progress to the next discipline.

How to play

The mechanic at the heart of almost every event is rapid alternating button presses. Tap Z and X in quick alternation to build your athlete’s speed or power, then release or press again at the decisive moment to jump or throw. Browser controls for Player 1:

  • Sprint / power — alternate Z and X as fast as possible
  • Jump / release — press Z or X at the right moment
  • Direction — arrow keys (jump angle, javelin aim)
  • Start — Enter  |  Select — Shift

Two players can compete simultaneously, taking turns or using separate gamepads.

Tips

  • Alternate Z and X with a steady tapping rhythm rather than hammering one key — you build speed measurably faster this way.
  • In the long jump and 110m hurdles, wait for your speed meter to peak before pressing the jump button; early releases cost distance and clear height.
  • In the hammer throw, let the rotation gauge reach maximum before releasing — patience pays off in metres.
