Game description:

Soccer is a top-down football game Nintendo published for the NES in 1985, one of the system’s North American launch titles. Before kick-off you choose a national team, set the number of periods and a difficulty level, then play against the CPU or a second player at the same keyboard. The field scrolls vertically as play moves up and down the pitch — straightforward enough to learn in a minute, but the AI at higher settings gives you a proper match.

How to play

You always control the outfield player closest to the ball — switching is automatic, so focus on positioning rather than chasing. Both goalkeepers are CPU-controlled. Use the arrow keys to move, X to shoot or pass, and Z for a chip or power kick. Press Enter to start a match and Shift for Select on the pre-game setup menu.

Tips

  • Don’t commit your whole team forward — the automatic switch makes a trailing player your first defender the moment the AI counter-attacks.
  • The CPU goalkeeper is beatable from sharp angles; cutting in from the wing and shooting early often works better than trying to work the ball to the centre.
  • On higher difficulties the AI closes down quickly. Pause near the box and wait for a defender to commit before shooting into the gap.
