Tokio (also known as Scramble Formation) is a vertically scrolling arcade shooter released by Taito in 1986. Piloting a biplane over the skies of a realistically rendered Tokyo, players must defend the city from a mysterious aerial invasion. Unlike many shooters of its era, you can capture enemy planes to build a wide formation, drastically increasing your firepower and spread.

How to play

Your main objective is to survive the waves of enemy aircraft while destroying ground and air targets. The game uses standard arcade controls in your browser: use the arrow keys to move your plane, press Shift to insert a coin, Enter to start, and Z to fire. Capture red planes to add them to your formation, and press X to switch your formation shape on the fly.

Tips

• Experiment with your formation shape: a wide spread is excellent for clearing weak enemies, while a tight column focuses your damage on larger targets.
• Captured planes can be sacrificed to absorb enemy fire, so don’t hesitate to use them defensively to survive a tough wave.
