Tip Top is the 1983 European arcade release of Sega’s classic isometric platformer, better known as Congo Bongo. You play as an intrepid safari explorer chasing down a mischievous gorilla who set your tent on fire. Taking cues from games like Donkey Kong and Frogger but presenting them in vibrant pseudo-3D, the game challenges you to scale treacherous cliffs, cross dangerous waterfalls, and dodge wildlife to exact your revenge.
How to Play
Your objective is to navigate to the end of each stage and reach the gorilla before the bonus timer runs out. Use your arrow keys (acting as the arcade joystick) to move across the isometric grid, and use the Z or X keys to jump. Avoid all hazards, including charging rhinos, rolling coconuts, and water, as one hit will cost you a life.
Tips
- Watch the shadows: The isometric perspective can make lining up jumps tricky. Pay close attention to your character’s shadow to gauge exactly where you will land.
- Patience is key: You have no attacks to defend yourself. Wait for enemy patterns to emerge and for moving platforms to fully align before committing to a jump.
