Thrasher: Skate and Destroy is a 1999 skateboarding video game for the PlayStation, developed by Z-Axis and published by Rockstar Games. Known for its realistic, physics-driven approach to the sport, it stands in stark contrast to the arcade style of its contemporaries. The game tasks you with pulling off authentic tricks and combos while navigating street spots, outrunning security guards, and ultimately securing a magazine cover.
How to play
Your objective is to complete runs by meeting score targets, finding sponsors, and executing specific tricks to progress through various real-world levels. For PlayStation in the browser, the D-pad (mapped to arrow keys) controls your skater’s movement and balance. The face buttons handle your tricks: the bottom button is for crouching and ollies, the left button for flip tricks, the top button for grinds, and the right button for grabs.
Tips
- Timing is everything: Unlike other skating games, you must preload your jump by holding the ollie button and release it at the exact right moment to catch air.
- Catch your board: You must explicitly “catch” your board after performing a flip trick by pressing the trick button again before landing, otherwise you will bail.
- Run from the law: When your two-minute timer runs out, a security guard or police officer will chase you. Successfully avoiding them and exiting the level allows you to keep your score for that run.
