Game description:

Soleil is an acclaimed 1994 action-adventure game for the Sega Genesis, presented here in its French-language version. Often compared to The Legend of Zelda, it stands out for its unique companion system and surprisingly thoughtful narrative. After losing the ability to speak with other humans, the young protagonist must rely on a cast of animal friends, each lending their distinct abilities to aid in combat and exploration. The game is particularly remembered for presenting its monsters not as mindless evil drones, but with sympathetic perspectives.

How to play

Your goal is to explore the world, clear dungeons, and solve puzzles by strategically swapping between your animal companions. You can equip two animals at once, and their abilities often combine in useful ways.

  • D-pad (Arrow keys): Move
  • A/B/C buttons (Z, X, C): Attack, Jump, and Use equipped animal abilities
  • Start (Enter): Pause and access the companion menu

Tips

  • Experiment with combinations: Try equipping two different animal companions at once. Their powers often synergize to overcome obstacles that neither could clear alone.
  • Talk to everyone (and everything): While you cannot speak to humans for much of the game, talking to animals and even monsters provides crucial hints and story context you would otherwise miss.
  • Save your money: You’ll need to spend coins to use certain abilities, such as the cheetah’s dash, so avoid spending needlessly early on.
