Released in 1989 by Aicom and Jaleco, The Lord of King is the original Japanese arcade version of the fantasy hack-and-slash platformer better known in the West as The Astyanax. As the warrior Roche, you fight your way through a dark medieval world populated by mythical monsters, armed with a powerful battle axe and destructive magic spells.
How to Play
Your objective is to reach the end of each stage and defeat the resident boss to continue your journey. Use the arrow keys to move, press Z to swing your axe, X to jump, and C to unleash a screen-clearing thunder spell when you have magic in stock. The game supports two-player cooperative action if a second player joins in.
Tips
- Watch your power gauge at the bottom of the screen. If you stop swinging your axe for a moment, the bar fills up, allowing your next strike to be a devastating, flaming attack with much greater range and power.
- Magic attacks are limited and highly destructive. Save your thunder spells for tough boss encounters or when you are completely surrounded by enemies with no way to escape.
