The Great Ragtime Show (released outside Japan as Boogie Wings) is a wonderfully chaotic side-scrolling shooter released for the Arcade in 1992 by Data East. Players pilot a biplane equipped with a trailing hook to grab and hurl enemies or scenery, but the real twist comes when the plane is destroyed: you continue the fight on foot, hijacking everything from tanks and pogo sticks to stampeding elephants in a beautifully detailed steampunk world.

How to Play

Survive the eccentric levels and defeat the bosses. Use your primary fire to shoot and your secondary button to deploy the hook to pick up and throw objects. If your biplane is shot down, you can still run, shoot, and commandeer other vehicles or animals until you take another hit. (For browser arcade games, default controls typically map movement to the arrow keys, and action buttons to Z, X, C, or Shift/Enter for coin and start).

• Your hook is a devastating weapon—use it to grab bombs, vehicles, or even enemies to clear a path through the onslaught.
