Released in 1990 by Tecmo for the NES, Tecmo World Wrestling is a pioneer in the sports genre, bringing the spectacle of professional wrestling to home consoles. As the first wrestling game to feature a play-by-play announcer calling the action at the bottom of the screen, it expanded upon the foundations of classics like Pro Wrestling. Players choose from a roster of unique fictional wrestlers, each with their own signature moves, and grapple their way to the championship.
How to play
The objective is to defeat opponents by pinning them for a three-count or forcing a submission. Use the D-pad (mapped to arrow keys) to move around the ring, bounce off ropes, and climb turnbuckles. Use the A and B buttons (Z and X on your keyboard) to execute strikes, grapples, and specialized moves. Start (Enter) pauses the game. Timing is critical when locking up with an opponent to perform a successful throw or hold.
Tips
- Master your chosen wrestler’s signature moveโusually performed by grappling and pressing a specific directional button with an action buttonโto quickly wear down the opponent.
- You can step outside the ring to brawl or recover, but be mindful of the 20-second countout.
- Pay attention to the play-by-play text; it can give you a sense of the match’s momentum and how much damage has been dealt.
