Tecmo World Cup Soccer is a classic arcade-style football game released for the NES in 1990. Moving away from the RPG-style mechanics of Tecmo’s other football titles, this game delivers fast-paced, traditional soccer action where you directly control the players on the pitch. Pick your favorite national team and compete in a straightforward, action-heavy tournament to win the World Cup.
How to play: The objective is to outscore the opposing team before the match ends. Use the D-pad to move your active player. On offense, press A to pass the ball and B to shoot. On defense, press A to switch control to the player closest to the ball, and B to perform a sliding tackle. In the browser, these map to the arrow keys for movement, Z and X for the A and B buttons, and Enter for Start.
Tips:
- Slide tackles are very effective for stealing the ball, but timing is crucial; commit too early and the attacker will simply dribble past you.
- Passing frequently is much faster and safer than trying to dribble through the opponent’s defense with a single player.
