Game description:

Tecmo Super Bowl for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), released in 1993, is the celebrated 16-bit upgrade to the iconic NES American football game. This beta version offers a fascinating glimpse into the development of a classic sports title, carrying over the beloved arcade-style gameplay and NFL player rosters of the era while upgrading the graphics and sound to take advantage of the SNES hardware. Known for its fast-paced action, stat tracking, and legendary plays, it remains a favorite among retro sports enthusiasts.

How to Play

The objective is to lead your chosen NFL team to victory through a full season or single exhibition games by outscoring your opponent. On offense, you select plays from a playbook and execute passes or runs, while on defense, you attempt to read the offense and tackle the ball carrier or intercept passes.

Default Controls: Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move your player. Press A (X key) to cycle through receivers or dive, B (Z key) to hike the ball, pass, or tackle, and Y (S key) or X (A key) for special moves. Start (Enter) pauses the game and Select (Shift) calls timeouts.

Tips

  • Master the zigzag: Just like in the NES original, running in a slight zigzag pattern can often break the AI defenders’ pursuit angles.
  • Check player conditions: Before a game, review your roster’s physical condition; starting a backup in “Excellent” condition is often better than playing a star who is “Bad”.
  • Dive tackles: Use the dive tackle carefully, as a missed dive leaves your defender completely out of the play, giving up massive yardage.
