Game description:

Sweet Home is a pioneering psychological horror RPG released by Capcom for the Famicom (NES) in 1989. You control a team of five documentary filmmakers who become trapped in the haunted Mamiya mansion while attempting to restore its frescoes. Blending traditional turn-based JRPG combat with puzzle-solving and permanent death, the game forces you to carefully manage each character’s unique abilities and limited inventory slots to survive. Its heavy emphasis on resource management and mansion exploration laid the groundwork for the entire survival horror genre, directly inspiring Resident Evil.

How to Play

The objective is to explore the mansion, solve environmental puzzles, and escape with as many team members alive as possible. Since each of the five characters has an essential unique item (like Kazuo’s lighter or Akiko’s first aid kit), losing a party member means finding alternative, often finite items to replace their function. The standard NES controls apply in the browser emulator: use the Arrow keys to move, Z to confirm actions, X to cancel, Enter to open your inventory, and Shift for Select.

Tips

  • Pair up your team: Characters can explore in groups of up to three. Grouping them helps balance combat encounters and inventory space.
  • Conserve healing items: Tonics are extremely limited. Rely on Akiko’s first aid kit to heal status ailments like poison and curse whenever possible.
  • Save often: The game features permanent death. If a character falls in battle, they are gone for the rest of the playthrough, which can make subsequent puzzles much harder or require finding specific fallback items.
