Game description:

Released by Capcom in 1989, Sweet Home is a groundbreaking survival horror RPG for the Famicom (NES) that laid the foundation for the entire Resident Evil franchise. Based on the Japanese horror film of the same name, you guide a team of five documentary filmmakers through the haunted Mamiya Mansion. This version features the widely acclaimed English translation patch by Gaijin Productions and Suicidal Translations, making its tense, permadeath-driven gameplay and puzzle-solving accessible to English-speaking players.

How to Play

Your objective is to explore the mansion, solve puzzles, and find a way out while keeping your party members alive. Each of the five characters has a unique, essential item (such as a lighter, camera, or medical kit) required to bypass specific obstacles. The game uses standard NES controls, which map to your keyboard in the browser: use the Arrow Keys to move and navigate menus, Z (A button) to confirm actions or interact, X (B button) to cancel, Enter for Start, and Shift for Select. You can split your party into smaller groups to cover more ground, but be carefulโ€”if a character dies, they are gone for good, and you will need to find replacement items to take over their unique role.

Survival Tips

  • Use the “Call” command in combat: If a character is ambushed, you can use the Call command to bring your other separated party members into the battle, provided they are in adjacent rooms.
  • Manage your limited inventory: You can drop items anywhere in the mansion to free up space. Keep a mental note of where you leave key items and healing tonics so you can retrieve them later.
  • Conserve your healing items: Akiko’s First Aid Kit cures status ailments, but health-restoring tonics are limited. Retreat and regroup instead of pushing forward with low HP.
