Released for arcades in 1992 by Banpresto and NMK, Chou Jikuu Yousai Macross (also known as Super Spacefortress Macross) is a vertically scrolling shoot ’em up based on the classic 1984 film Do You Remember Love?. Players take control of a VF-1 Valkyrie to battle Zentradi forces across seven stages. Known for having a more accessible difficulty curve than many arcade shooters of its era, the game successfully captures the intense mecha action of the original anime.
How to Play
Your objective is to shoot down enemy forces, defeat stage bosses, and survive the Zentradi onslaught.
Controls: Use the Arrow keys to maneuver your Valkyrie, Z to fire your primary weapon, and X to unleash screen-clearing Reaction bombs. Instead of transforming freely, your Valkyrie shifts forms by collecting specific letter power-ups: F for Fighter mode (spread shot), G for Gerwalk mode (powerful piercing laser), and B for Battroid mode (homing missiles).
Tips
- Look for the Armor (A) power-up: This rare item transforms you into an Armored Battroid, granting you an extra hit of protection before the armor is destroyed, along with a devastating cluster missile attack.
- Match your form to the situation: Use the Gerwalk’s piercing laser to quickly melt down bosses and heavy enemies, while the Fighter’s spread shot or Battroid’s homing missiles are better suited for clearing swarms of smaller ships.
- Collect the Minmay dolls: Keep an eye out for rare, hidden Minmay dolls and medals scattered throughout the stages to significantly boost your score.
