Released by Sega in 1989, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle brings the company’s classic mascot to the 16-bit Sega Genesis in a colorful 2D platformer. You guide Alex across the planet Paperock to rescue his missing father, King Thor, by punching and jump-kicking enemies while collecting Baums (gold coins). True to the series’ roots, progressing requires you to engage in high-stakes Rock-Paper-Scissors (Janken) matches to win essential items and vehicles.
How to Play
Navigate each level, breaking blocks to find coins and defeat quirky enemies to reach the exit. Enter shops and challenge bosses to Janken matches; winning rewards you with powerful tools like the Sukopako Motorcycle, Pogo Stick, or Pedicopter.
- Move / Crouch: Arrow Keys
- Jump: Z or C
- Punch / Use Item: X (Press in mid-air for a jump-kick)
- Pause / Item Menu: Enter
Note: During a Janken match, use the Arrow Keys to highlight your choice and X to lock it in.
Tips
- Master the Jump-Kick: Punching while in the air extends your attack hitbox forward, making it much safer to take down moving enemies than relying on grounded punches.
- Watch Your Step in Janken: Losing a Rock-Paper-Scissors match in a shop doesn’t just lose you moneyโit costs you a life. Don’t gamble for items if you’re low on extra lives, and use the Telepathy Ball to read your opponent’s choices.
- Conserve Your Vehicles: Items like the Motorcycle or Pedicopter can let you skip difficult sections, but taking a single hit will destroy them. Save them for the trickiest platforming segments.
