Game description:

Super Black Onyx is a pioneering role-playing game developed and published by Bullet-Proof Software for the Famicom (NES) in 1988. As a reimagined version of Henk Rogers’ classic computer RPG The Black Onyx, this console release expands upon the original with completely redesigned maps, larger dungeons, and a new magic system. The game retains its distinct text-free, pictograph-based interface while adding enhanced monster variety and upgraded graphics to suit the NES hardware, offering a challenging old-school dungeon crawling experience.

How to Play

Your objective is to explore deep dungeons, defeat monsters, and find the legendary Black Onyx. You navigate the game using standard NES controls: use the D-pad to move your party and navigate menus, the A button to confirm actions, the B button to cancel, and Start/Select to pause or manage options. In the browser, these map to the arrow keys (D-pad), Z (A), X (B), Enter (Start), and Shift (Select).

Tips

  • Pay attention to visual cues: Because the game relies on pictographs rather than text stats, monitor your characters’ color-coded health bars closely during combat to know when to heal.
  • Draw a map: Like many classic first-person dungeon crawlers, the labyrinths in Super Black Onyx are intricate and easy to get lost in. Mapping your progress on paper is highly recommended.
