Star Soldier is a fast-paced vertical scrolling shooter released for the NES in 1986 by Hudson Soft. Piloting the Caesar starship through sixteen stages, players must dismantle the forces of the Starbrain by taking down diverse enemy formations and heavily defended ground targets. The game is known for its intense speed, demanding reflexes, and a distinctive mechanic where your ship can duck beneath floating space stations to avoid incoming fire.
How to play
The goal is to survive waves of enemies, defeat the stage boss, and rack up a high score. Use the arrow keys to maneuver your ship. Press Z or X to fire your weapons, Enter for Start, and Shift for Select.
Tips
- Use the scenery: You can fly underneath the floating background architecture. While beneath these structures, your ship is completely invincible to enemy fire, giving you a brief moment to reposition.
- Upgrade your weapons: Collect the ‘P’ power-ups to enhance your firepower. Upgrades increase your firing speed and eventually grant a multi-directional spread shot that is essential for surviving later stages.
- Defeat the Starbrain quickly: When facing the stationary Starbrain bosses, destroy them as fast as possible. If you take too long, they will retreat and you will lose out on a massive score bonus.
