Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage is a side-scrolling beat-em-up developed by Software Creations for the Sega Genesis in 1994, based directly on the Marvel Comics crossover event of the same name. Cletus Kasady — Carnage — escapes Ravencroft Institute and rallies a gang of villains including Shriek, Doppelganger, Demogoblin, and Carrion to terrorise New York City. Spider-Man and Venom reluctantly join forces to fight through 16 stages and stop them.
How to play
You play as Spider-Man in the Genesis version, brawling through street-level stages. Controls map the 3-button Genesis layout to your keyboard:
- Arrow keys — move / duck
- Z (C button) — jump
- X (B button) — attack
- S (A button) — call a hero ally
- Enter — pause
Hero allies — Black Cat, Captain America, Cloak & Dagger, Firestar, Iron Fist, and others — appear as glowing icons mid-stage. Collect them and press S to summon one; they clear the screen but each can only be called once per stage.
Tips
- Pick up hero ally icons before advancing — leaving them behind wastes the most powerful tool you have.
- Jump then attack (Z then X) has longer reach than a standing punch and keeps you safer against armoured enemies.
- Bosses have a short recovery window after their special move — that is the moment to press your attack rather than backing off.
