Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe brings the Bitmap Brothers’ iconic futuristic sports title to the Sega Master System. Released in 1991, this violent blend of handball and ice hockey puts you in control of Brutal Deluxe, a struggling team aiming for the top of the Speedball league. Matches are fast-paced and physical, rewarding you for scoring goals, injuring opposing players, and hitting point bumpers scattered across the metallic arena.
How to Play
The objective is to outscore the opposing team before time runs out. Points are earned by throwing the ball into the opponent’s goal (10 points), bouncing it off the arena’s star bumpers (2 points), or tackling opponents until they are injured and forced off the pitch (10 points). Use the D-pad (arrow keys) to move. Press Button 1 or 2 (Z or X) to pass, shoot, or tackle when you don’t have possession. Holding the button allows you to throw the ball higher or execute a slide tackle.
Tips
- Hitting the multiplier loop on the side of the pitch increases the value of all your subsequent points, which can drastically swing the match in your favor.
- Don’t just focus on the goal; scoop up the coins that appear on the pitch to upgrade your team’s stats between matches.
- Tackling the opposing team’s goalkeeper is a valid tactic to leave the net wide open for an easy score.
