Space Thunderbird is an early 1980s arcade bootleg of Nichibutsu’s classic space shooter, Moon Cresta. Running on modified Galaxian hardware, this unauthorized clone retains the exact same gameplay as the original. You pilot a modular spacecraft defending against waves of erratic alien enemies, aiming to clear stages and successfully link your ship’s components together.
How to Play Space Thunderbird
Use the Arrow Keys to move your ship left and right, and press Z, X, C, or Space to fire. Since this is an arcade title, press Shift to insert a coin and Enter to start.
The core mechanic is the docking sequence. You begin with Ship I. If it is destroyed, Ship II takes over, followed by Ship III. However, if you survive the initial enemy waves, you enter a docking minigame where you must carefully align your current ship with the next tier. Successfully docking combines the ships, giving you a wider, more powerful multi-shot attack, though it also makes you a larger target.
Tips
- Master the Docking: Docking is crucial for firepower, but use your thrusters gently. Crashing during the docking sequence will destroy your active ship.
- Watch the Patterns: Unlike standard grid shooters, the enemies here dive in looping, unpredictable patterns. Focus on dodging first and firing when you have a clear opening.
- Mind Your Width: A fully combined Ship I+II+III has excellent firepower but a very wide hitbox. Be extra cautious of diving enemies when fully docked, as you are much harder to miss.
