Space Invaders X (Japan) is the Japanese release of the 1999 PlayStation reimagining of Taito’s arcade classic, developed by Z-Axis and published in Japan by Taito. It was the first entry in the series to render its aliens and playfield in 3D, updating the original fixed-shooter formula with unlockable weapons, shield upgrades, boss encounters, and bonus stages against the alien motherships.
How to Play
Your objective is unchanged from the arcade original: hold off the descending rows of aliens before they reach the bottom of the screen, while dodging their return fire. Defeating four enemies of the same color drops a weapon upgrade, and clearing bonus rounds lets you damage the mothership directly. Move your ship left and right with the D-pad, mapped to the Arrow Keys in the browser, and fire with the Cross button, mapped to the Z key.
Tips
- Chain kills of same-colored aliens on purpose â four in a row is what triggers a weapon upgrade, so it’s worth breaking formation for rather than just clearing the nearest target.
- Two-player co-op is available with separate scoring for each player, so it doesn’t force you to share lives if you want to compete rather than cooperate.
- The original 1978 arcade Space Invaders is unlockable within the game â worth revisiting once you’ve cleared enough of the main mode.
