Game description:

Sopwith is a classic side-scrolling aerial combat game developed by BMB Compuscience for DOS in 1984. Piloting a World War I biplane, your goal is to destroy enemy buildings and vehicles while fending off rival aircraft and avoiding hazards like birds and the ground. Its responsive physics and destructible targets made it an early PC staple.

How to play

Your objective is to destroy all enemy ground targetsโ€”such as factories and tanksโ€”without crashing or running out of fuel and ammunition. You control the pitch and speed of your plane, and must balance dogfighting enemy fighters with tactical bombing runs. The game uses the original MS-DOS keyboard controls. Press ‘Right Alt’ + ‘Enter’ to play in fullscreen.

Tips

  • Mastering loops is essential; pitching up until you flip over is the quickest way to turn around and re-engage targets.
  • Watch your altitude when dropping bombs, as getting caught in your own blast radius will destroy your plane.
  • If you run low on fuel or ammo, carefully fly back and land at your home base to restock.
