Sonic Wings Assault (also known as AeroFighters Assault) is an arcade-style aerial combat game released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998. Developed by Paradigm Entertainment and Video System, the game brings the classic vertical-scrolling shooter series into full 3D. Players select from a diverse, quirky cast of international pilotsโincluding a ninja and a dolphinโeach flying unique fighter jets with their own specific payloads. The focus is entirely on fast, arcade-action dogfighting and taking down massive mechanical boss enemies rather than realistic flight simulation.
The objective is to clear each stage by eliminating the target enemies or surviving boss encounters before the time runs out. The default browser controls for the Nintendo 64 are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys (analog stick) to pitch and roll your aircraft. Press Z (Z button) to fire your primary machine guns and Shift (R button) to fire lock-on sub-weapons. The WASD keys (C-buttons) manage your speed and yaw, while X and C (A and B buttons) are used for character-specific special attacks and defensive countermeasures.
Tips:
- Each jet has limited ammunition for its sub-weapons and specials. Save your powerful homing missiles and screen-clearing special attacks for the boss fights at the end of each stage.
- Constantly adjusting your speed is crucial. Slow down to make tighter turns when dogfighting agile enemy fighters, but speed up to evade incoming missile locks.
- If you run out of defensive countermeasures, you can perform a barrel roll to break an enemy’s missile lock.
