Game description:

Sonic The Hedgehog Challenge Mode is a 2023 ROM hack of the Sega Master System version of the original Sonic The Hedgehog, built by DarkTheCreature and shown at that year’s Sonic Hacking Contest Expo. Rather than telling a new story, it rebuilds the 8-bit game’s existing zone layouts from scratch to be noticeably harder โ€” the creator is explicit that it’s meant as a stiffer challenge, not a full kaizo-style hack.

How to Play

The goal is unchanged from the original 8-bit Sonic: clear each zone’s acts and beat Dr. Robotnik’s boss to move on. Move with the Arrow Keys, and press Z or X (Master System Buttons 1 and 2) to jump and spin-attack enemies. The big twist is that every ring has been stripped out of the levels, so there’s no safety net and no way to farm an extra life through rings alone.

Tips

  • Lean on 1-Up Monitors instead of rings: with rings gone, most acts hide a One-Up Monitor to keep your life count up โ€” except Labyrinth Zone Act 1, which has none, so play that act with extra care.
  • Grab Shield Monitors where you find them: a handful of stages include a Shield power-up, and with no rings to fall back on, a shield is your only cushion against a mistimed hit.
  • Know the original first: the hack assumes familiarity with the Master System Sonic 1’s zones and enemy placements, since the redesigned layouts lean on that knowledge to catch you off guard.
