Sonic Knuckles World (released as Sonic & Knuckles) is a 1994 platformer developed by Sonic Team for the Sega Genesis. Serving as the concluding half to the Sonic 3 storyline, the game lets you speed through massive, multi-tiered zones to stop Dr. Robotnik from relaunching the Death Egg. You can play as either Sonic the Hedgehog, utilizing his pure speed and mid-air shield abilities, or as his rival Knuckles the Echidna, who introduces fresh gameplay with his ability to glide across gaps and scale walls to uncover hidden routes.
How to Play
Your objective is to reach the end of each act, gather rings for protection, and defeat the bosses. In the browser emulator, the Sega Genesis controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move or crouch, and press Z, X, or C to jump and attack. Press Enter to pause. As Sonic, tapping jump again in mid-air triggers a quick shield strike; as Knuckles, holding jump in mid-air lets you glide, and pushing against a wall allows you to grab on and climb.
Tips
- Knuckles has a slightly lower jump height than Sonic, but his wall-climbing ability grants access to higher, exclusive routes that often hide extra lives and giant Special Stage rings.
- Sonic’s mid-air “Insta-Shield” slightly extends his attack range, allowing you to safely strike spiked or flame-covered enemies without taking damage.
- Hold down on the directional keys while moving fast to roll into a ball; this helps you maintain momentum down slopes and safely destroy enemies in your path.
