Game description:

Somari (also known as Somari the Adventurer) is a famous unlicensed 1994 bootleg game for the NES, developed by Hummer Team. It audaciously ports Sega’s flagship title, Sonic the Hedgehog, to Nintendo’s 8-bit console, but swaps out the blue blur for Mario. The result is a bizarre but technically impressive platformer that brings Green Hill Zone and other classic levels to the Famicom hardware.

How to Play

Your goal is to race through familiar zones, collect rings, and defeat Dr. Robotnik at the end of each act. For NES controls in the browser, use the Arrow Keys to move, crouch, and look up. Press Z or X to jump.

Tips

  • Despite being based on the original Sonic the Hedgehog, Somari borrows the Spin Dash mechanic from Sonic 2. Hold Down and repeatedly tap the jump button to rev up, then release Down to burst forward.
  • The physics feel different from the official Sonic games. Mario has more momentum and less mid-air control, so time your jumps carefully over spikes and bottomless pits.
