Sky Shark is a vertically scrolling action shooter developed by Toaplan and published by Taito in 1987. Brought to DOS, it puts you in the cockpit of a World War II biplane battling through waves of enemy tanks, artillery, and aircraft. The port translates the intense arcade experience to the PC, retaining the challenging level design and signature bomb mechanics.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive five hostile stages and destroy the enemy forces. Movement is handled with the arrow keys, while firing your primary machine gun and deploying screen-clearing bombs are typically mapped to the Spacebar and Alt or Ctrl keys. Collect “S” power-ups from destroyed red enemy squadrons to upgrade your shot spread, and grab “B” icons to replenish your limited stock of bombs.
Tips
- Save your bombs for emergencies; they provide brief invincibility and are best used when you are trapped by overwhelming enemy fire or facing a tough boss.
- Memorize the positions of ground-based anti-aircraft turrets, as their fast-moving projectiles are often the most dangerous threats on the screen.
- Try to take down entire red fighter squadrons before they leave the screen, as this is the only way to spawn the power-ups needed to upgrade your weapon.
