Game description:

Command a World War II US Navy submarine in the Pacific with Silent Service, a detailed naval simulation released for the NES in 1989 by Ultra Games. As the captain of a Gato-class sub, you are tasked with patrolling dangerous waters, hunting down enemy convoys, and surviving depth charge attacks from escort destroyers. The game blends strategic map navigation with intense, real-time combat encounters where managing your depth, speed, and torpedoes is vital for a successful patrol.

How to Play

Your objective is to sink as much enemy tonnage as possible while completing your patrol and returning safely. The game relies on several different stations, including the periscope, bridge, map, and damage control. In the browser, the default NES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys (D-pad) to steer and navigate menus, Z and X (A and B buttons) to fire torpedoes or select options, Enter (Start) to pause, and Shift (Select) to switch between the different submarine stations.

Tips

  • Manage your battery: Running submerged drains your battery quickly. Surface at night to recharge your batteries and use your diesel engines for faster travel.
  • Periscope discipline: Keep your periscope down when you are not actively acquiring a target. Destroyers can spot an exposed periscope and will converge on your position.
  • Dive deep to evade: If you are detected and depth charges are dropping, dive as deep as your submarine can safely go and run at minimum speed to slip away from sonar detection.
