Side Pocket is a pocket billiards simulation released by Data East. This Sega Genesis port of the 1987 classic brings its signature city-hopping tournament and trick shot challenges to the 16-bit console. Instead of traditional pool rules, the main mode challenges players to clear the table and reach a target score before running out of lives, testing both accuracy and strategy.
How to play
In the primary Pocket Game mode, your goal is to sink all the balls on the table and achieve a minimum score quota to advance to the next city. You have a limited number of shots; missing a shot or scratching costs a life. The game also features a 2-player 9-Ball mode and a Trick Game mode.
Controls:
- Arrow Keys: Aim the cue stick and adjust spin
- S / X / Z (A / B / C buttons): Confirm shots, set power, and apply English (spin)
- Enter (Start): Pause / Start game
Tips
To meet the high score quotas in later cities, you need to chain consecutive successful shots or sink balls in numerical order to build up your score multiplier. Mastering English (spin) is essential; use it to control where the cue ball stops so you are always set up for your next shot.
