Scorched Earth is a classic artillery strategy game released for DOS in 1991 by Wendell Hicken. Known affectionately as “The Mother of All Games”, you command a tank in turn-based combat against up to nine other players or AI opponents. By carefully adjusting your turret’s angle and power, you calculate trajectory to blast enemy tanks across fully destructible terrain.
How to play
The objective is to be the last surviving tank on the battlefield. You must calculate the correct angle and power for your shots to hit opponents. Between rounds, you use your winnings to purchase devastating weapons like MIRVs and Napalm, alongside vital defenses like shields and parachutes.

Game is controlled by the same keys that are used to playing under MS DOS. For fullscreen press ‘Right Alt’ + ‘Enter’. |
Tips
- Pay close attention to the wind indicator before each shot, as it significantly affects your projectile’s trajectory.
- Invest in shields early on to survive the initial onslaught, and buy a parachute to prevent taking fall damage if the ground beneath you is destroyed.
- Don’t just focus on explosions; use dirt-moving weapons to bury your opponents and restrict their line of sight.
