Samurai Shodown V (also known as Samurai Spirits Zero) is a 2D weapons-based fighting game developed by Yuki Enterprise and released by SNK for arcades in 2003. Serving as a prequel to the rest of the series, this entry introduces new mechanics alongside a massive roster of 24 fighters, emphasizing tactical spacing and deliberate strikes over fast-paced combos.
How to Play
The goal is to defeat your opponent using a combination of slashes, kicks, and special moves. For this arcade release, movement is controlled with an 8-way joystick, and actions use a four-button layout (weak slash, medium slash, kick, and dodge). In the browser, movement is mapped to the arrow keys, with attacks on Z, X, C, and V. Press Shift to insert a coin, and Enter to start.
Tips
- Watch the Sword Gauge: Your attack power drops after every swing and only recovers when you rest. Wildly swinging will leave your attacks weak, so wait for clear openings.
- Use the Dodge Button: The dedicated dodge button allows you to perform hops, ducks, and forward rolls. Rolling through an opponent’s heavy slash often guarantees a massive counterattack.
- Concentration One: When your health is critically low and the gauge turns blue, you can activate Concentration One to slow down time, giving you a chance to land an unblockable fatal strike.
