Game description:

Samurai Shodown is a classic 2D weapon-based fighting game originally developed by SNK and ported to the Sega Genesis in 1995. Set in late 18th-century Japan, the game distinguishes itself from other fighters of the era by focusing on armed combat, where heavy slashes deal massive damage and precise spacing is crucial. You can choose from a diverse roster of warriors, each wielding unique weapons ranging from katanas to rapiers.

How to Play

The objective is to defeat your opponent in a best-of-three rounds format. As a Sega Genesis title, movement and jumping are handled with the D-pad (mapped to your arrow keys), while your attacks are mapped to A, B, and C (typically Z, X, and C on your keyboard), with Start (Enter) to pause. Different button combinations execute light, medium, and heavy weapon slashes or kicks.

Tips

  • Manage your Rage Gauge: Taking damage fills your POW meter. Once full, your character turns red and their attacks deal significantly more damage.
  • Watch your weapon: Clashing weapons can result in being disarmed. If you lose your weapon, you must fight bare-handed until you can pick it back up.
  • Patience is key: Unlike combo-heavy fighters, Samurai Shodown rewards precise timing and punishing whiffed attacks with a single devastating slash.
