Developed by NMK and published by Jaleco in 1989, Saint Dragon is a distinctive horizontal shoot ’em up where you pilot a cybernetic dragon rebelling against an empire of monster machines. Instead of relying purely on reflexes to dodge enemy fire, you command a long, segmented tail that acts as an indestructible, moving shield, making its gameplay stand out among arcade classics.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive six stages and defeat the large boss at the end of each. The arcade controls translate simply in the browser: use the arrow keys to fly in eight directions, and press Z or X to fire your primary weapons. Collect power-up tokens (which look like eggs) to upgrade your firepower to lasers, bouncing bombs, or turrets, and to increase your movement speed.
Tips
- Master the Tail: Your tail follows the exact path of your movement. By flying in tight circles, you can wrap the tail around your dragon’s vulnerable head to create a nearly impenetrable shield.
- Hyper Mode: Collecting enough power-ups triggers a temporary “hyper” state. Use this brief window of maximum firepower and invulnerability to aggressively clear out tough waves of enemies.
