Romancia is a 1987 side-scrolling action-RPG for the NES, originally developed by Nihon Falcom as the third entry in the Dragon Slayer series. Often referred to as “Dragon Slayer Jr.” due to its bright, cute visuals, it hides a notoriously challenging and cryptic adventure where you have just 30 minutes to rescue Princess Selina.
How to play
Navigate the kingdom, speak to townsfolk to gather items, and find a way to save the princess within the strict 30-minute time limit. Controls map the standard NES gamepad to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move, Z and X for the B and A buttons to attack and jump, and Enter/Shift for Start/Select.
Tips
- Do not repeatedly talk to the King at the start of the game, or he will grow annoyed and cut your remaining time down to 15 minutes.
- Once you earn your rings in the first town and cross the bridge, stop killing monstersโdoing so will cause you to lose your rings, making the game unwinnable.
- Keep track of your “Souls,” which are required to travel between heaven and earth. If you run out, you will be permanently stuck.
