Developed by UEP Systems and released for the PlayStation in 1999, Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman is an action hack-and-slash game that embraces a wonderfully absurd “East meets West” aesthetic. You play as Zan, a Wild West sheriff who returns from samurai training in Japan to defend his hometown from a supernatural invasion of ninjas and demons. The gameplay seamlessly blends close-quarters katana combat with ranged revolver shooting, encouraging you to dispatch enemies with as much flashy style as possible to earn high rankings.
How to Play
Your goal is to clear each level of enemies, defeat the stage boss, and earn the highest possible style ranking. In your browser, the PlayStation controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the arrow keys (D-pad) to move, X (Cross button) to jump, and A (Square button) to swing your katana. Use Z (Circle button) to fire your revolver, and S (Triangle button) to perform special attacks. Press Enter (Start) to pause or skip cutscenes.
Tips
- Chain together sword strikes and gunshots in rapid succession to build your combo meter. Maintaining long combos is the key to achieving the coveted “Super Sexy Hero” ranking.
- You can use your katana to deflect incoming bullets. Time your sword swings just as enemy projectiles are about to hit you to knock them back and avoid taking damage.
- Save your Hero Gauge for tough encounters. Once it is full, you can activate Hustle Time to temporarily boost your attack speed and unleash devastating special moves on bosses.
