Originally conceived as a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D, Rise of the Triad: Dark War evolved into a wildly fast-paced, over-the-top 1994 DOS shooter from Apogee Software. You play as one of five members of the H.U.N.T. (High-risk United Nations Task-force) infiltrating a deadly cult on San Nicolas Island. It is known for its extreme running speed, ridiculous explosive weapons, and introducing chaotic elements like jump pads and “ludicrous gibs” to the early action FPS genre.
How to Play
The goal is to blast your way through labyrinthine levels, gunning down cultists, dodging elaborate traps, and collecting keys to reach the exit. Controls use the standard DOS keyboard layout: the arrow keys move and turn, Ctrl fires, Alt strafes, and Space opens doors or activates switches. You can also press Right Alt + Enter to toggle fullscreen mode in your browser.
Tips
- Choose your character wisely: The five H.U.N.T. operatives have different stats. Taradino Cassatt is balanced, while Thi Barrett is incredibly fast but has less health.
- Watch your explosive radius: Heavy weapons like the Heat Seeker and Drunk Missile are devastating, but firing them too close to a wall will instantly vaporize you.
- Use jump pads for secrets: While the engine is essentially flat, the game features springboards and floating platforms. Always check elevated areas for health, extra lives, and powerful weapons like the Excalibat.
