Rad Racer II is a checkpoint-based arcade racing game developed by Square and released for the NES in 1990. Serving as a direct sequel to the original classic, it drops you back into the driver’s seat of a high-speed sports car for another frantic dash against the clock. Navigating eight new visually distinct courses across the United States, you must weave through heavy traffic and reach the next checkpoint before your time expires.
How to Play
In your browser, use the Arrow Keys to steer, Z to accelerate, and X to brake. Press Enter to start or pause the game, and Shift to cycle through the available background music tracks.
Gameplay Tips
- Turbo Boost: Once you reach high speeds, press Up to engage your turbo and hit maximum velocity, but be carefulโsteering becomes much harder.
- Power Start: From a complete stop, hold Down until the dashboard power gauge fills up, then press accelerate to instantly launch at over 250 mph. This is essential for recovering lost time.
- Spin Outs: Unlike the first game, colliding with other cars or obstacles often results in a spin out rather than flying into the air. Use the Power Start immediately after a spin out, as normal acceleration is too slow to save your run.
